Leaving X (formerly Twitter) doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re seeking a short break or a permanent departure, the process is straightforward. This guide outlines the steps involved in both deactivating and deleting your X account, giving you the tools and knowledge to manage your online presence effectively.

A step by step guide to deactivating your X account

Deactivation serves as a temporary measure, allowing you to reactivate your account within 30 days if you change your mind. During this period, your profile, tweets, and followers will remain hidden from the platform. To deactivate your account, follow these steps:

Step 1: Log in to your X account on the platform’s website.

Step 2: Click on the More option in the left-hand menu.

Step 3: Select Settings and Privacy from the menu.

Step 4: Click on Your account.

Step 5: Choose Deactivate your account.

How to permanently delete your X account

If you’re certain about leaving X and have no intention of returning, permanent deletion is the way to go. Keep in mind that this action is irreversible, and all your data will be erased. To permanently delete your X account, adhere to these steps:

Step 1: Log in to your X account on the platform’s website.

Step 2: Click on the More option in the left-hand menu.

Step 3: Select Settings and Privacy from the menu.

Step 4: Click on Your account.

Step 5: Choose Deactivate your account.

Step 6: At the bottom of the page, click on Download an archive of your data. This allows you to save your X data before deletion.

Step 7: Once you have downloaded your data (optional), proceed with the deactivation process as outlined above.

Step 8: After the 30-day deactivation period, your account will be permanently deleted.

Deactivation vs deletion: What's different?

It’s crucial to distinguish between deactivation and deletion. Deactivation is temporary and reversible, making it suitable for users who need a break or are unsure about leaving permanently. Deletion, on the other hand, is permanent and irreversible, resulting in the complete erasure of your X account and data.
