Photos app all cluttered after updating to iOS 18? Here’s how to fix it

How to clean up the iOS 18 Photos app

iOS 18 has come to supported iPhones, and it brings several good, handy features like a fully customisable Home Screen and Control Centre.

Then, there’s the new Photos app. While the idea behind Apple completely revamping the good old Photos app from iOS 17 is on the right track, the implementation for the same has been a nightmare for iPhone users across the world.

Hop over to communities on Twitter or Reddit, and you will find plenty of complaints around how cluttered the new look of one of the most used applications on every iPhone is. Thankfully, there’s a way out – the Photos app is also very customisable. While you can’t restore it to the iOS 17 Photos app, you can make it fairly close. Here’s how to do that.

How to customise the iOS 18 Photos app

On any iPhone running iOS 18, begin by opening the Photos app. Now, scroll to the very bottom of the app and you should see a ‘Customise and Reorder’ button. If you don’t, scroll downwards once more.

Tap on the button, and you should be redirected to a new customisation page. You will see a lot of options here, and unless you’ve been on this page before, all of these sub-sections will be toggled on by default.

You can now toggle off sections that you don’t need. For a completely minimal look, you can toggle all these sections off. Go back and you will be back on the clean Photos app that you know and love.

However, we recommend keeping some of the options ticked. This includes the Utilities section, which will let you easily reach your Hidden and Recently Deleted section of photos, or the Shared Album section, which you may want to keep if you have shared albums with your family members.
