How to clean an air conditioner filter

As you prepare for summer, one of the first things to do is not only whether your air conditioner is working well but also the state of its filter. The filter in your air conditioner is prone to getting dirty over time and without regular cleaning, you won’t be able to breathe air free of dust, dirt, and debris.

Fortunately, cleaning the air conditioner filter is simple once you determine whether you can clean your AC filter. Check out the steps below to learn how to clean AC filters and how often you should clean them.

Step 1: Turn off the AC unit

If you are wondering “how do I clean the AC filter” then the first step should be turning off your air conditioner. If you leave the AC on while cleaning the filter, it could lead to unfiltered air circulating through your home. Before getting to the AC filter, check your user manual to locate the filter and check if it can be cleaned.

Here are the steps to follow:

i. Turn off your air conditioner.

ii. Remove the air filter. You may need to use a screwdriver to open the unit before removing the filter.

iii. If your AC unit has multiple vents then make sure to inspect inside the unit to remove all the filters.

iv. Inspect the filter.

Step 2: Vacuum the filter

If you see any dust build up on your AC filter then it is a sign that it’s time to clean it. To remove the dust or grime buildup from your air filter, use the hose attachment from your vacuum cleaner or use a handheld vacuum to remove it. If the vacuum doesn’t remove the buildup then you will need to wash the filter.

Step 3: Wash the filter

i. Washing the filter mostly depends on the size of it. For your HVAC filter, you can fill a sink with one part water and one part white vinegar and allow the filter to soak in the solution for one hour.

ii. Now rinse off the solution with fresh water and allow the filter to fully dry before returning it to the AC unit.

iii. If the filter is too big to fit in a sink, you can also wash it outdoors with a garden hose. Make sure to not use a pressurised water setting since it can accidentally damage the filter.

Step 4: Replace the filter

Depending on the condition of your AC filter, you can clean it by vacuuming and washing it. However, your AC filter may become worn or damaged over time and might need replacement. If your AC filter shows signs of damage like tears, holes, or excessive grime then it means you need to replace the filter. To replace the filter, first check your manufacturer’s guarantee on the shelf life of the filter. It is always recommended to make a note on your calendar to change the filter again at periodic intervals.

Step 5: Periodic AC filter cleaning

If you have installed a new air conditioner filter then you must follow these cleaning tips:

i. For best efficiency, you should clean your AC filter monthly.

ii. If you are washing your AC filter then leave it outdoors for drying for at least 30 minutes before returning it to the AC unit.

iii. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions for filter cleaning, which may vary depending on the type.

iv. If your AC unit has disposable air conditioner filters then it is recommended to replace it rather than clean it.

v. Use a canister of condensed air to clean the coils and fan of the AC regularly. This will blow away dust and any residual buildup.

It is never too late to start cleaning your AC filter, condenser coil and get your AC to top-shelf condition before summer hits its peak.
