Do you happen to be a travel bug? If yes, chances are, you already have or are looking to invest in a camera to document your travels. Now, some of you may like to carry a DSLR or a mirrorless camera with lenses, tripods, and the whole shebang. Some others on the other hand, may not like to carry so much weight, and carry something with a light and compact form factor, which still ensures they don’t have to compromise on image quality. What does one do then? They invest in an action camera, of course!
However, some of you may still be confused, as to which one to purchase. Worry not though, for we’re here to tell you the differences between the two, and help you make an informed decision.
DSLR camera vs action cameras
Here are some of the differences between a DSLR camera and an action camera.
1. Sensor size and image quality
DSLR cameras outperform action cameras in terms of image quality. This is because their bigger sensors collect more light and deliver deeper information. DSLRs often outperform action cameras in low-light conditions due to their bigger sensor size and quicker shutter speed.
On the other hand, action cameras often have smaller sensors, which may still generate excellent image quality but aren’t as crisp as accurate.
2. Low light performance
In terms of low-light capabilities, DSLR cameras outperform action cameras. As previously mentioned, DSLRs have bigger sensors, which are superior in gathering light and therefore, provide the requisite details for a sharp image.
DSLRs also benefit from their quicker shutter speeds, helping them to produce crisper shots in low-light situations. Action cameras, on the other hand, often feature smaller sensors and slower shutter speeds, which might result in less detailed photographs in low-light circumstances.
3. Video quality
When comparing the video quality of DSLRs with action cameras, there are a few important factors to consider. For starters, DSLR cameras have far higher resolution than action cameras. That means they can capture more information in their film, allowing you to generate high-quality videos with less work. DSLR cameras can also capture film in a wider range of light conditions so you won’t be concerned about too dark or too bright photographs.
Action cameras on the other hand however, are often smaller and lighter than DSLRs, making them ideal for taking videos of fast-moving subjects, that too from a variety of angles and perspectives. In addition to this, several action cameras also include wide-angle lenses, enabling them to capture more of a scene than a DSLR.
4. Lens selection
DSLR cameras have a significantly broader selection of lenses than action cameras. Although both types of cameras feature interchangeable lenses, DSLRs offer more options, including telephoto as well as wide-angle lenses, in addition to prime lenses.
Action cameras, on the other hand, are equipped with a singular type of lens, and very few support external lenses. Not to mention, the lack of options when it comes to the lenses themselves. This may hinder one’s creative options while capturing subjects.
5. Form factor
Perhaps one of the biggest considerations while buying a camera happens to be size and weight. This is where DSLRs lose out, as they are large and fairly bulky. The addition of large lens and flash light attachments adds all the more to their, therefore restricting free mobility for a photographer.

Action cameras on the other hand, are light and have an extremely compact form factor, making them ideal for use on the go, by the professionals and amateurs alike.
Each of them come with their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. What one chooses purely boils down to one’s preferences, requirements, and of course, budgets. We hope this helps.
