Google recently gave us a front-row seat by revealing the much-anticipated ‘Year in Search’ trends that piqued people’s interest in 2024. The year-end roundup curates Google’s top searches that users in India looked up in 2024. From movies to cricket fever, Hum to Search to memes and understanding Gen Z terms; here is a list of top searches that the nation was the most curious about.
Google unveils India’s Year in Search 2024
Before we bid goodbye to 2024, let’s take a moment to reflect on the top searches in India this year. Amongst the top of Google’s trending searches were cricket tournaments like the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup. Other popular searches included Election Results 2024 and Olympics 2024. The India Super League made it to the 10th spot this year. Vinesh Phogat and Hardik Pandya’s names stood out as the most searched personalities on the search engine.
Coming to movies, the top trending searches in India were Stree 2, Kalki 2898 AD, 12th Fail, Laapataa Ladies and Hanu-Man. This was followed by Maharaja, Manjummel Boys, The Greatest of All Time, Salaar and Aavesham. The top TV shows searched in India were Heeramandi, Mirzapur, The Last of Us, Bigg Boss 17, Panchayat, Kota Factory, Queen of Tears and Marry My Husband.

This year, Google included a new category in the Year in Search list, Hum to Search. This feature allows users to search for songs without knowing the lyrics. Users can either hum or whistle the tune to search for songs. The search giant revealed the top songs that were looked up in 2024 were Nadaaniyan, Husn, Illuminati, Katchi Sera, Ye Tune Kya Kiya, and Yeh Raaten Yeh Mausam.
In terms of travel destinations, the top trending searches of 2024 included Azerbaijan, Bali, Manali, Kazakhstan, Jaipur, Georgia, Malaysia, Ayodhya, Kashmir, and South Goa, in this order. Google also revealed top searches for queries related to their location including AQI levels, sports bars, bakeries, and trendy cafes.
In 2024, Google’s top searches also included viral memes and the meaning of certain trending terms. Users turned to Google to understand memes like “Orange Peel theory,” “very demure, very mindful,” and “Blur Grinch knee surgery.” Users were also interested in knowing the meaning of terms like “moye moye,” “cervical cancer,” and “pookie”. Workplace quirks also found a voice through the Gen Z employee leave email meme became one of the most popular searches on Google.
This list showcased emotions, obsessions, and discoveries that shaped India’s Year in Search 2024. Well, it looks like 2024 has been a very diverse year for Indian users, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 brings for us!
