The year 2024 for Google is all about artificial intelligence. In fact, the brand also went on to mention how it used the word AI close to 124 times during its annual developer’s conference — Google I/O 2024. In more recent developments, the brand has now rolled out NotebookLM, an AI-powered research assistant, globally for over 200 countries — including India. Here’s everything we know about the launch:
Google NotebookLM: What is it and what can it do
Formerly known as Project Tailwind, NotebookLM is Google’s AI-powered tool that helps users generate content as well as summarise and explain it better. NotebookLM typically helps students and professionals by organising their complex notes for them.
This means if you’re a college student, you can simply stack your reading material about a topic onto the app, and then ask pointed questions in order to know the subject better.
Apart from summarising a response, AI will also provide you with relevant citations from the documents you upload. The platform was launched last year and has since been used in facilitating research and writing tasks better.
Google NotebookLM: What's new?
Google has introduced an update for the app which will now allow better integration with other services and enhance user activity. Here are some of its new features:
Better support for Google Slides: Users can now upload Google Slides and web URLs as sources apart from simply having traditional documents, like PDFs and text files.
Inline citations: The new update will direct users to the exact passage in their notes and provide easy fact-checking options.

Notebook guide: This newly introduced feature will help convert your sources into useful formats, such as FAQs, Briefing Docs or Study Guides. It will further help in breaking down complex notes into simpler concepts, making them easier to comprehend.
Gemini 1.5 Pro: NotebookLM will now come backed with the multimodal capabilities of Gemini 1.5 Pro. This means the platform can now support images, charts, and diagrams, along with citations if required.
How to use Google NotebookLM
NotebookLM can be accessed via your laptop or tablet. All you have to do is follow the below-mentioned steps:
Step 1: Visit /notebooklm.google.com/
Step 2: Once there, you will be prompted to sign in using your Google Account
Step 3: Next, you can get started by creating a new Notebook and naming it descriptively
Step 4: Add as many sources as you’d like, including Word documents, web URLs, presentations or PDFs
Step 5: Now, you will be able to use the query box and ask questions to the platform regarding your content
Step 6: Once the answer is generated with relevant citations, you can save your work and share it with your friends
While a lot of the target audience for the platform is students and researchers, there is always a possibility of Google integrating it into Google Docs in the long run for feasibility purposes. However, until any announcements are made, it is best to take speculations with a pinch of salt. For more news, don’t forget to stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma.
