Google Maps will now tell you when to take a flyover in India

If I had a dollar for every time I was driving towards town in Mumbai and got no help from Google Maps over which flyovers to take and which ones to let go, I’d have a lot of dollars, and I mean a lot. The small screens on most smartphones today don’t help either.

If you have used Google Maps in Tier 1 cities, you too may have had several-similar instances, where the best Google Maps could do was give you a tiny, often vague, white indicator. Fortunately, Google has heard us, and a solution is here.

Google Maps is now introducing a number of India-centric features, one of which is dedicated cues for flyovers. Maps will now show a visual card asking you to “take” a flyover, letting you clearly know which turns to make ahead of time.

Google Maps is also introducing some other features along with this, specifically for Indian users. This includes different routes for four-wheelers when narrow roads are detected, which should help you avoid those gullies that are only traversable for two-wheelers.

Maps will now also show nearby EV charging stations for two-wheelers. Google has partnered with players like Ather, ElectricPe, Kazam, and Statiq to make this possible.

Reporting on-road incidents is also much easier now, with dedicated options like Crash, Congestion, Roadworks, Lane Closure and Stalled Vehicle now available to users.

Lastly, in cities like Kochi and Chennai, you can now book metro tickets directly from Google Maps, thanks to a partnership with ONDC and Namma Yatri networks.

The new features will come to Google Maps users on iPhones and Android phones in phases, so stay on the lookout for any new updates on the Play Store and App Stores.
