Google launched the first version of Gemini in December last year. Now, it seems that the company might release the next-gen Large Language Model (LLM) within the next two months. As per The Verge, Google has revealed how it is looking to release a ‘Gemini 2.0’ in December of this year.

Apart from that, the report also suggests how it is planning to make the update ‘widely available’ soon after its launch. Here’s what we know so far and what you can expect from this launch.

Google Gemini 2.0: What's expected?

The report doesn’t explicitly highlight how the AI model will change for its users. It however goes on to state how Gemini 2.0 does not display the performance gains that Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and the team expected.

That said, there could be significant performance improvements in the pipeline along with faster processing. Users may also see better contextual awareness with the upcoming Gemini 2.0. If that’s not all, several also believe that Google might bring Project Astra and camera vision capabilities to the model. Other details about the launch are currently awaited by users and Google is yet to come back with an official announcement.

Recapping Gemini AI models so far

In a span of one year since its launch, Gemini has witnessed a rapid evolution. Here are some of the most critical changes, along with their timelines, that have come to the AI model so far:

December 2023: Google introduced Gemini 1.0 and Gemini 1.0 Pro which marked its debut into the LLM space. Gemini Pro was earlier made available through Bard (before its rebranding) and a ‘Nano’ version was introduced via the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

February 2024: Google announced that its new model will be able to handle and understand more information, and it went on to launch a Gemini 1.5.

May 2024: At Google I/O, the company introduced Gemini 1.5 Flash and Gemma 2, which rolled out a month later.

The models were made with the aim to be more accessible to developers. It also showcased Project Astra, a multimodal AI assistant that can pursue real-time interaction via text, audio and video.

September 2024: Last month, Google announced an updated version of its Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash models. The update featured quality and capability improvements.

With an eventful year, Google seems to be gearing up for its next launch. That said, competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic also have respective launches planned in the last two months of the year, making it an interesting few weeks in the AI space.
