Google has introduced an online project that provides an entertaining twist to the game of chess. Based on specific user prompts, GenChess, a generative AI tool, will allow its users to create unique chess pieces every time.
Users can customise the white pieces and the AI tool will automatically come up with a related idea for the black pieces. The best part is, it can be used even if you play against the computer.
Google Labs announces GenChess
GenChess is created by Google Labs, and this experimental AI tool is powered by the Gemini Imagen 3 generation model. In a post on X, Google Labs announced GenChess, and revealed how it uses Imagen 3 AI model to turn users’ ideas into playable art pieces.
To play chess online, users can choose between Classic and Creative modes. In the Classic mode, chess pieces can be generated as per a prompted theme, but the classic design of the pieces will be retained. In contrast, the Creative mode can generate abstract chess pieces.

Upon starting a new game, users will get to choose from three difficulty settings – easy, medium, and hard. Coming to timers, users can pick 5+3 timer and rapid plays or the classic 10-minute timer for the game.
It is important to note that at the time of filing this story, the tool is not available in India.
The game, GenChess, was released alongside the 2024 World Chess Championship. While Google is the main sponsor of the event, the company used the platform to announce some chess related products and initiatives.
Google has announced an upcoming chess bot within Gemini. Users will be able to type their moves, and Gemini will display it on the updated chess board as it progresses. This feature will be made available to Gemini Advanced subscribers in December.
