Disney+ targets account sharing and will be restricted to households only

Following the steps like Netflix, Disney+ has begun a password-sharing crackdown. It may require users to pay extra for each member they wish to add to their account for sharing beyond their household. Here is everything to know about the new development.

Disney+ to get stricter with account management

Disney+ mentioned that the paid sharing program is a way to provide users with ways to enjoy the streaming subscription along with family or friends. However, the devices need to be managed from within a household. This will include all the devices associated with the same primary personal residence which means it is intended to be used by individuals who reside there.

People outside of your household will need to sign up and pay for their subscription or be added as an ‘Extra Member’ to your account for an additional monthly fee. After having set that up, users can continue enjoying Disney+. Alternatively, a new account can be created and their data can be transferred to the new subscription or Extra Member profile to ensure their watch history and settings stay intact.

It is important to note that some profiles are not transferrable. Primary profiles, like those belonging to the account holder, will remain. Also, profiles created for minors and profiles set to Junior Mode cannot be swapped.

Upon changing a few settings, Disney+ will be available on your supported devices like your smartphone and laptop, in case you are away from home or on the go. If you have moved and need to reset the household location, you can go to Settings > Update Household to make the changes. These selections may require an OTP that will be sent to the email address of the primary account holder.

Disney+: Add-on subscription

In the United States, Disney+ Basic subscription costs $9.99 (roughly Rs 840) per month while Disney+ Premium is priced at $15,99 (roughly Rs 1,340) per month. The Extra Member profile will cost an additional $6.99 (roughly Rs 590) per month for a basic subscription and $9.99 (roughly Rs 840) per month for a Premium subscription. So far, only one Extra Member is permitted per account.

These features and capabilities are only limited to the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region for now. It may broaden to other countries soon. For more such information, subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
