DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Pitting the popular AI chatbots against each other

To say that DeepSeek has taken the world of AI chatbots by storm is an understatement. In no time, the chatbot is topping the App Store charts in the US, while also quickly growing in popularity in other regions across the world.

While the company’s low-cost operations probably have the folks over at OpenAI scratching their heads right now, here’s how the actual chatbot differs from the other very popular AI chatbot right now – OpenAI’s very own ChatGPT.

Here’s a quick comparison between the two platforms in terms of all the key aspects. Let’s go.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Service availability

Both DeepSeek and ChatGPT are available on all iPhones and Android phones thanks to dedicated apps available via the App Store and the Play Store respectively. However, ChatGPT has the edge here by virtue of being the older platform of the two.

Newer iPhone users today can benefit from Siri’s integration with ChatGPT. OpenAI’s platform also has dedicated apps for both Windows and macOS, allowing you to use the platform in its own application on most laptops or desktops.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Free usage and premium pricing

Both DeepSeek and ChatGPT have a free tier and a premium tier. The free tier on both platforms allows users to ask questions, look up trivia, solve puzzles or problems, and more. However, while ChatGPT’s free tier comes with limited usage on a daily basis, DeepSeek appears to have no such restrictions.

The only reason you’d be paying a subscription fee for DeepSeek would be to access advanced tasks and using its APIs to make your own tool. General users who just want a no-nonsense chatbot that can help with answers, solutions and planning can easily get by without any subscriptions, that too without any limits.

Meanwhile the paid tiers on both platforms unlock any limitations and provide access to advanced models that can understand and respond to more complex forms of inputs, including images, PDFs and voice.

Both platforms will charge you for services of these kind, but even then, DeepSeek’s $0.55 and $2.19 per million input and output tokens respectively is cheaper than ChatGPT’s $15 and $60.

DeepSeek AI vs ChatGPT: Other strengths and weaknesses

Availability and costing are key aspects, but they aren’t everything. ChatGPT currently offers several features that DeepSeek lacks. These include integrations with iOS on newer iPhones, as well as a dedicated Voice Mode, that lets you talk to the chatbot, and have it sound pretty close to a very real conversation.

On the other hand, DeepSeek offers a similar user interface that’s a little more minimal, and by extension, simpler to use for new users.

Both platforms also have their strengths in some areas. DeepSeek is apparently better at generating Python and Java code, and doing things like solving complex equations, whereas ChatGPT tends to provide better results for humour, narrative text and marketing-related material.

There are also some cons specific to both platforms. DeepSeek, being a Chinese platform, is restricted by Chinese government’s censorship rules, so searching for anything that the Chinese government deems as politically sensitive may not yield the results you want.

We asked DeepSeek what happened at Tiananmen Square, and it played dumb. DeepSeek may also struggle with responding to prompts and queries around real-time events, something ChatGPT had a tough time with about a year ago.

In ChatGPT’s case, it cannot be used with the newer AI language models freely, unless you’re on the paid plan, as daily limits can run out pretty quickly.

Those were the key differences between the two popular chatbots. However, to determine which one is better for you, we recommend using both platforms to take the call yourself, as based on your needs, your mileage with either may vary.
