Deadpool and Wolverine IMAX 3D review

Deadpool’s third movie (his first with the MCU) isn’t his best, but that doesn’t stop the film from looking absolutely stunning in IMAX 3D

Deadpool and Wolverine IMAX 3D review

Deadpool and Wolverine was the first MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) that I was genuinely excited for in a long, long time. It isn’t exactly news that Marvel Studios’ movies aren’t what they used to be since Avengers: Endgame.

However, with brilliant writing that had gone behind the first two Deadpool films clubbed with the fact that this was going to be Marvel’s first R-rated flick, my hopes were high.

Unfortunately, Deadpool and Wolverine wasn’t a lot more than a nonsensical plot tailored around Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and several other cameos. Thankfully, the overall product wasn’t all that bad, largely thanks to one thing – the visuals.

Despite not featuring a great plot, Deadpool and Wolverine did feature some amazing action sequences, right from the opening credits. All of these were brought to life in IMAX 3D, which has been my format of choice for all kinds of films from Oppenheimer to Dune 2.

However, unlike many other 3D movies on the big screen, Deadpool and Wolverine felt different in many instances, with several 3D elements seeming to pop out even more than usual. Here’s why that was the case.

Why Deadpool and Wolverine in IMAX 3D was different?

Many 3D elements in Deadpool and Wolverine seemed to pop out, and no, we are not talking about the 3D effects that makes objects feel like they’re flying at you through the glasses.

The movie has several scenes where elements overlap the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen for a more pronounced 3D effect. This is called ‘Frame Breaking’.

What is Frame Breaking?

‘Frame Breaking’ is when a movie or a scene intentionally aligns elements to break the conventional aspect ratio barrier, and let elements overlap the vertical black borders.

The effect is possible only on IMAX screens, as only the taller IMAX displays feature the black borders that allow for this. The resulting 3D effect looks stunning in the IMAX 3D format.

In Deadpool and Wolverine, the effect can be spotted in several instances where Deadpool’s swords, Wolverine’s claws, or even (SPOILER ALERT) the flying head of a skeletal Deadpool variant from the multiverse can be seen flying over the black bars.

Of course, that’s not the only reason to watch Deadpool and Wolverine, or any movie for that matter, in IMAX 3D. The IMAX format is a culmination of not just superior visuals, but also better surround sound quality, better seats and more.

Coming back to the movie itself, we wouldn’t recommend the latest Deadpool flick for those looking for a great plot. But if you’re in for a couple of hours of fun, some witty jokes, and stunning 3D effects, along with some great cameos, you should catch Deadpool and Wolverine in theatres before it’s gone!
