ChatGPT’s new image generation feature is “melting” OpenAI GPUs!

ChatGPT to cap image generation requests after Ghibli trend says Sam Altman

ChatGPT 4o’s new image generation feature has taken the internet by storm, with users eagerly creating Studio Ghibli-inspired images. However, not all good things last. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed on X that the feature’s virality, while exciting, is causing significant strain on the company’s GPUs.

“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting,” said Altman on X. The GPU is crucial for processing these intensive requests from millions of users. Due to the feature’s immense popularity, OpenAI is now introducing rate limits, which will limit the number of image generation requests a free user can make.

ChatGPT to cap image generation requests temporarily

Initially, the new image generation feature on ChatGPT was made available to all Free, Pro, Plus, and Team accounts. However, post the overload of requests, the company is placing limits on the viral feature. At present, free users are struggling to generate even one image.

Sam Altman has maintained that the limits placed will be temporary, and the company is working on making this feature more efficient, so it doesn’t overload the GPUs like it currently is.

Free tier users will soon be able to generate three images per day. He also acknowledged that ChatGPT is rejecting certain requests despite complying with the image generation policies. He reassured that his team is working on fixing these issues as quickly as possible.
