OpenAI launches an advanced voice mode for ChatGPT, here’s how to use it

OpenAI announced the voice mode capability in May. While the roll out was well-received, however, the voice of Sky resembled that of Scarlett Johansson from the movie ‘Her’ and ran into controversies. The actress’ legal counsel got involved, post which OpenAI discontinued the use of the voice.

Since then, people have been able to configure ChatGPT to talk to them in other voices. Let’s see what the advanced version offers to its users.

ChatGPT gets an advanced voice mode

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has worked on the voice mode. The advanced version responds more quickly to requests. It even stops talking and listens in case the user interrupts. There are nine voices to choose from. You can even enter instructions for voice chats in the Customisations part of the app’s settings.

OpenAI claims that it has improved accents in some foreign languages and has increased the speed of the conversations. You can always ask ChatGPT to speed up the pace or incorporate accent as per requirement.

With the advanced mode, you can ask ChatGPT to tell you a bedtime story, help you get ready for a job interview or even work on your language skills.

The Advanced mode is only available to those with subscriptions to OpenAI’s Plus, Team or Enterprise plans. There may be a time limit to be able to use the new mode.

How to enable voice mode on ChatGPT

Assuming OpenAI has been granted access to your smartphone, make sure the app is updated to the latest version. Upon downloading the update, open the ChatGPT app. You need to provide access; you will receive a notification and you can hit the continue button to get started.

Create a new chat on ChatGPT, you will be able to see a sound wave icon next to the message and microphone icon. Make sure your sound is on and tap on the new icon. You will shortly hear a sound and the circle in the middle of the screen will morph into a fluid sky blue and white animation. Post that, you can start speaking and receive a response almost immediately.
