While smart TVs are very common, smart monitors or smart displays are not. This makes sense because smart TVs are essentially displays with a built-in computer. Computer monitors and displays, on the other hand, don’t need ‘smart’ features as they’re always hooked up to a computer.
This is slowly changing now, however, and not only are more smart displays entering the market, but they’re now also making sense as smart TV alternatives for small homes.
What is a smart display?
Like a smart TV, a smart display is simply a display or monitor that has a built-in computer and OS. Think of a smart display as a super size tablet with an interface controlled by a remote rather than touch. They’re great for small homes or children’s rooms as they can double up as both a TV and computer monitor when needed.

While TVs don’t have the colour resolution and sharpness to match the requirements for a desktop computer, a smart monitor can easily double as a TV and display. Today, let’s look at the smart display options Samsung has to offer at the moment.
3 best Samsung smart displays of 2024
1. Samsung Smart Monitor M5
2. Samsung Smart Monitor M8D
3. Samsung Smart Monitor M7
1. Samsung Smart Monitor M5
The Samsung M5 is a smart monitor with a 27-inch VA panel and 1080p resolution. VA or vertically aligned panels offer great contrast and colour accuracy but lack in viewing angles and response time. They’re best viewed from straight on and are better suited for work and productivity than gaming.
This monitor makes for a great smart display as the smart features allow it to pull double duty almost as a second computer. You get the ability to make calls, control other SmartThings compatible devices in your home, stream content directly, and more. You can take advantage of features like wireless PC mirroring, direct Microsoft 365 integration, and more. Light users might not even need a separate PC.
The Samsung Smart Monitor M5 is available for Rs 15,999 on Croma.
If you want something larger, you can opt for the Samsung M50D, which offers the same features and a larger 32-inch display for a slightly higher price of Rs 20,299.

If you want something that’s more of a productivity powerhouse and a high-resolution TV, you might want to consider the Samsung M8D instead. While the software features are similar to that of the M5, this is a larger 32-inch monitor with a much higher resolution of UHD or 3840×2160. The brightness also goes up from 250 nits (fine for indoor use) to 400 nits (great for use in brighter rooms and for a decent HDR10+ experience). This monitor can also upscale SD or HD content to 4K using built-in AI upscalers.

The M7 is a nice compromise between the cost effectiveness of the M5 and the power of the M8. This is a 32-inch UHD monitor with a VA panel and boasts of an impressive contrast ratio of 3,000:1.

Brightness, however, is relatively low at 240 nits. Again, 240 nits is fine for indoor use but is not enough for HDR content or for use in a well-lit room or when there’s bright sunlight streaming in. We’d opt for this if you need a monitor that’s larger than the M5 but don’t want to spend too much money on something like the M8.
The Samsung Smart Monitor M7 is available for Rs 31,199.
