Apple had several exciting announcements across platforms including iOS, iPadOS and macOS at its WWDC 2024 event last night, the highlight of which was the new Apple Intelligence suite of AI features.
This time around though, the company also had a fair bit in store for gamers. One such example is Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft’s latest addition to the popular game franchise, coming to MacBooks and iMacs, as well as iPads later this year. Here’s everything you need to know.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: What you need to know
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in 16th-century Japan. You take on the role of two playable characters, including Naoe- a Shinobi assassin from the Iga province, and Yasuke, a Samurai of African origin. Each character has a different playing style, skills, and weapon set. The two characters navigate the sprawling landscape of feudal Japan– across the regions of Kyoto, Kobe, and Osaka, in the Sengoku period, a time of intense civil war in Japan, as they hunt down targets, strengthen their network with other spies, build hideouts, and more.

The game, Ubisoft says, will have a variety of landscapes for players to explore – right from bustling ports and towns to open landscapes with cherry blossom trees, cascading waterfalls, shrines, and more.
The announcement comes in shortly after Assassin’s Creed Mirage was made available for iPhones and iPads just days ago. That’s not all. Ubisoft has also announced that its latest installment in the Prince of Persia series, The Lost Crown, will be coming to Mac later this year as well.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming to Mac on November 15. It is already available for pre-order on the Mac App Store, and is expected to be priced somewhere around $70 (Approximately Rs 5,900).
How Apple is going big on gaming this year
Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is one of the first games to be made available for Mac and iPads on the same dates as it is for Windows and consoles. This is a big deal, as the move signifies that supported Apple devices no longer need to wait for a port, but will get the same game as console and PC players, right on launch day.
Whether this finally establishes Macs and iPads as gaming devices, remains to be seen, and will also depend on a number of other factors, including how big the library of Mac/iPad games eventually get.
In other news, with iOS 18, iPhones will also get a dedicated game mode which minimises background activity to ensure smoother gameplay and high frame rates, similar to Android devices.

All of this, coupled with the fact that Apple has announced a new Game Porting Toolkit that enables developers to bring more and more games to Windows compatible games to Mac, goes to show how the company is going all out on gaming this year, and perhaps in the longer run too.
