Future Apple Watch bands might be able to track your blood pressure

Tracking various health metrics using only a 'fabric band'

Future Apple Watch bands might be able to track your blood pressure

Your Apple Watch is more than just an accessory on your wrist today. The smart wearable can do everything, from placing calls to monitoring your sleep quality. With watchOS 11, Apple also brought in a Vitals app for more insights on your health.

But that’s not all, Apple is also reportedly working on a watch band that may be able to track your blood pressure and respiration rates. A recent patent, observed by Patently Apple, reveals a ‘fabric band’ that could help measure various health metrics.

Apple Watch bands may track blood pressure levels in the future

According to a patent numbered 12133743, Apple is currently exploring fabric-based stretchable bands that may include sensor circuitry to take ‘measurements’ on the body parts. These include electrocardiogram measurements, blood pressure measurements, and respiration rate measurements, amongst others.

However, an interesting aspect of this patent highlights this may not have to be restricted to Apple Watch bands, and the wearable device can be extended to a wristband with elastic fabric, a headband with elastic fabric, or other wearable items that come with elastic fabrics. That said, these may still be a while away, as the only stretchable fabric band that Apple currently uses is for its smartwatch.

When will this feature be available to all Apple Watch users?

It is hard to tell if or when Apple plans to bring this patent to life. However, since the patents were just granted, the brand might just be working on the idea for its feasibility. That said, the circuitry and sensors in question may take some time to see the light of day.

Meanwhile, you can always explore the existing features of the Apple Watch, along with the improvements that have come along with the watchOS 11 upgrade.

With the new update, users can now add more widgets to the Smart Stack, such as Shazam, Translate, Distance, Photos, severe weather alerts as well as Live Activities. And if that’s not all, they can also change their default watch ringtone and choose from seven other options.
