Apple may launch the new AirTag next year with major improvements

Apple’s first-gen AirTag was launched back in 2021, and since then, hasn’t seen any design or technical changes. The location tracking accessory, however, may just be receiving its first major update since its debut.

As per a Bloomberg report, the second-gen AirTag could be available to the public early next year with some major improvements.

3 major improvements that could come to the new Apple AirTag

Apple reportedly seems to be addressing several security concerns, including being misused for stalking, with the new AirTag. The company also plans to make it difficult to tamper with and harder to detect. These changes can be categorised into three main categories:

1. Improved range

2. Better wireless chip

3. Strengthened privacy

The first change will allow the accessory to have improved range and accuracy. Apple also seems to be equipping the device with a more powerful chipset. However, apart from this, it also could be addressing the misuse that often comes with a location tracking device.

Since several reports suggest how the AirTag is a common tool used by stalkers, Apple may also be adding sound alerts to notify a user of an unknown AirTag in their vicinity. The company also plans to make it significantly difficult to remove the built-in speaker. Lastly, the new AirTag may look exactly the same as the previous generation; however, the brand may end up reducing the size to ensure it remains compact.

When will the new AirTag be available to everyone?

So far there isn’t an official announcement by the company stating when the device will be available to everyone. That said, the new model is said to be codenamed B589 and it has been “progressed in manufacturing tests” as of today. The report also mentions how Apple could be looking at an early 2025 release for the second generation of the device.

However, that’s all the details known so far about the new AirTag and we might just have to wait a little longer to know more.
