Cupertino-based tech giant Apple recently issued an advisory, highlighting to users several unsafe charging practices and the hazards associated with them. Read on to find out what they are, and the practices one must follow to avoid them.
Always charge your devices in well-ventilated spaces
The advisory says that a device should always be charged in a well-ventilated area. When a device is charging and is placed in close proximity to one’s bed, or under their blanket/pillows, the same can cause the device and the charger both to overheat. This may result in a fire, in extreme cases.
Avoid using third-party chargers of an inferior quality
Overheating and short circuits can also occur if one uses a third-party charger of an inferior quality, which may lack the safety standards followed by Apple’s products. The advisory therefore recommends, even though chargers which meet USB 2.0 and later standards can be used for iPhones, users purchase “Made for iPhone” cables and adapters.

It also adds that one should avoid using chargers or cables damaged in any manner, as these may lead to electric shocks, and in more extreme cases, fires as well.
Never charge your devices in proximity to liquids
Lastly, Apple strongly advises one to avoid charging their iPhones near water or liquid of any kind, as any accidental spills or splashes can also cause a short circuit, potentially damaging the device and charger itself, or even resulting in a fire. Not just that; charging in the presence of any sort of moisture, Apple says, can lead to short circuits and fires.
Other safe charging practices to follow
In addition to this, there are a few other steps one can take to avoid any potential damages due to charging.
One of them is to simply use their device for as long as possible once it is fully charged. Frequent or overcharging causes your device’s battery to wear out, gradually causing it to be able to retain lesser and lesser juice over time. Another step one can also take with their iPhones is to turn on “Optimised battery charging”. The feature, introduced with iOS 13, delays charging your device past 80 per cent when it knows your device is going to be connected to the charger for an extended period of time. It does so by learning your usual charging routine using on-device machine learning.

Lastly, one should also avoid charging their iPhone, or any gadget for that matter, during a thunderstorm and lightning. Lightning often causes power surges, which can damage both, the charger cable and adapter, as well as your device itself.
With these steps, you can safely charge your device at all times, while also ensuring you can avoid any potential harm to it as well as yourself.
