Apple’s iPhone XS Max, iPhone 6s Plus are now officially ‘vintage’: Here’s what it means

If you are using Apple’s old iPhones or Apple Watches, and by chance it’s the iPhone XS Max or the iPhone 6s Plus, or the Apple Watch Series 2, then there’s news for you.

Another two iPhones have been added to the vintage list by Apple, whereas, the Watch Series 2 has been declared as an obsolete device. But what does it mean for you? Read on to know.

What is Apple's 'vintage' status?

Apple has updated its list of vintage devices, and the newest additions include the iPhone 6s Plus, which was released back in 2015, and the iPhone XS Max, which made its debut in 2018. This is interesting as the latter recently received the latest iOS 18 update.

Additionally, Apple also updated its list of obsolete devices, declaring four of the variants of Apple Watch Series 2, including the stainless steel and aluminium, as obsolete products.

Usually, Apple considers a product vintage when it stops selling it for more than five years. On the other hand, a device is called obsolete seven years after Apple stops its official distribution.

Having said that, these are not the only devices that have received the vintage and obsolete status. There are many Apple devices that received the vintage status in the past.

The list includes the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus Red, iPhone 8 Red, iPhone SE, iPhone 5, and iPhone 4. Some of the other older iPhones, like the original iPhone and iPhone 3G, among others, are considered as obsolete.

What it means for you?

If you are using any of these devices, don’t fret, as you can still continue to use them. However, these phones won’t receive any further software updates from Apple. The iPhone XS Max received its last update, iOS 18, recently, whereas, the iPhone 6S Plus is stuck on iOS 15.
