Until not too long ago, Intel’s Core Ultra lineup of chipsets were the only processors you could find with on-device AI support. That changed with the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite chipsets launched as alternatives, and even powered devices like the new Microsoft Surface laptops.
Now, Intel’s long-standing rival AMD has also entered the AI chip market, starting with its Ryzen AI 300 processors. Here’s all you need to know about the new chips.
AMD Ryzen AI 300 chipsets: What’s new?
The new AMD Ryzen AI 300 series is the latest in AMD’s Ryzen series of chipsets which come with on-device AI support.

The Ryzen AI 300, the first in the lineup, currently includes the Ryzen AI 9 370 and the Ryzen AI 9 365, both of which feature up to 12 high performance Zen 5 cores. Succeeding the Zen 4 architecture, the new Zen 5 cores feature 24 threads and AMD Radeon 800M series graphics with RDNA 3.5. The new chips also offer 50 per cent more LL3 cache memory over Zen 4 processors.
Coming to the AI powers of the chips, both the AMD Ryzen AI 300 chipsets feature NPUs (neural processing units) that are capable of up to 50 TOPS (trillion operations per second). That’s actually 10 TOPS more than the requirement for Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC certification. In other words, laptops powered by the Ryzen AI 9 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365 will be powerful for on-device AI use cases.
During its launch event at Computex 2024, AMD also compared the chips to rival chipsets like the Apple M3, the Snapdragon X Elite and the Intel Core Ultra 185H, adding that the Ryzen AI 300 series promise up to 36 per cent more performance than its competitors.
AMD will be partnering with PC-makers like Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo to release new laptops with these chipsets onboard. Expect new launches from these brands over the next few months.
