Before the cool products at the Consumer Electronics Show take the limelight, a number of chip-makers have taken the stage to announce new chipsets at CES 2025. We already saw Nvidia reveal its new RTX 50-series GPUs and Intel, its Core Ultra Gen-2 chipsets for laptops. Now, AMD has announced several chipsets of its own.
These include new Ryzen processors built for desktops, as well as chipsets for laptops and even handheld devices. Here’s a quick look at all the new announcements.
AMD Ryzen Desktop processors at CES 2025
AMD has announced two new Ryzen processors for desktops at the expo. These are the new Ryzen 9950X3D and Ryzen 9900X3D processors. In case you haven’t already figured it out, these are variants of the Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X which come with the brand’s 3D V-cache technology and a larger cache size for better gaming performance.
The 9950X3D comes with 16 cores, 32 threads and can clock up to 5.7GHz while pulling in 170W of power. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D comes with 12 cores, 24 threads, and can clock 5.5GHz while pulling in 120W of power. Both processors will be available later this year, but still in the first quarter of 2025.
AMD Ryzen Laptop chipsets at CES 2025
In addition to its desktop processors, AMD has also announced three new chipsets for laptops. These are the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, the Ryzen 9 9955HX and the Ryzen 9 9850HX. All three are powerful, gaming-oriented chipsets, that pull in 54W of power and push 5.4GHz clock speeds (5.2GHz on the Ryzen 9 9850HX).

Apart from these, AMD also announced several other laptop chipsets under the Ryzen AI series, which you can find more details on here. All these chipsets will be available in laptops across manufacturers by the second quarter of the year.
AMD Ryzen Z-series processors for handheld PCs
Handhelds have been a growing market for a couple of years now, and popular devices in the segment including the ASUS ROG Ally have been powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z-series chips. Now, AMD has announced the next generation of Z-series hardware for these products.
The three new chipsets include the lower-end AMD Ryzen Z2 Go, which comes with 4 cores, 8 threads and can output 4.3GHz clock speeds. There’s also the Ryzen Z2 which comes with 8 cores, 16 threads and 5.1GHz clock speeds. Both these chipsets also come with 12 GPU cores and can pull 15W-30W power.
Then, there’s the top-end AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, which carries 8 cores, 16 threads and 16 GPU cores, clocking up to 5.0GHz at power inputs of 15W-35W. This chip will also use AMD’s RDNA 3.5 tech and a combination of Zen 5 and Zen 5c core architecture for optimal gaming performance on whatever handheld it powers. These handhelds are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2025.
Other announcements by AMD at the event include a brief look at the upcoming RDNA 4 tech and the Radeon 9000 series GPUs, which are still not here, but will compete with the RTX 50-series Nvidia GPUs upon launch.
