All iPhone 16 series variants get faster charging speeds

Apple forgot to tell us the new iPhones can charge significantly faster

All iPhone 16 series variants get faster charging speeds

Apple’s usual MO when it comes to showcasing the newest iPhone is leaving the complicated specifications aside. Only after some certification data pops up online do we find out about details like the battery capacity or the RAM. This time with the iPhone 16 series, things are no different.

While Apple focused on a vague better battery life tag for its four new iPhones, the brand made no mention of change in wired charging speeds. Now, it turns out all four iPhone 16 models are actually much faster at charging.

iPhone 16 series gets 45W wired charging

The new iPhones are actually rated for a maximum 45W wired charging, which is significantly higher than the charging speeds of last year, even on the Pro models. What’s great is the new change comes to all the variants in the series, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This suggests Apple didn’t lock the higher charging speeds to its premium Pro models only, meaning you have one less reason to shell out some extra cash for the Pro models.

Yes, these charging speeds are still on the lower side compared to some Android phones that offer proprietary charging at over 100W speeds. However, flagships like the Google Pixel 9 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 which are available in the same price bracket as the iPhone 15 are still locked at under 50W speeds.

The details are made available on Chinese micro-blogging platform Weibo thanks to user Whylab, spotted first by Android Authority. For comparison, the iPhone 15 series (iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus) charged at 20W only, and the iPhone 15 Pro series (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max) charged at a maximum of about 29W.

Which charger would you need for maximum speeds?

Despite the improved charging speeds, the iPhone 16 series still doesn’t come with a charging adapter in the box. The default 20W Apple Charger will not help you make the 45W speeds, so it may be a good idea to buy a higher wattage charger from Apple. You can also use third-party alternatives that are officially rated to charge iPhones like the CMF 65W GaN charger which should suffice.
