AI agents caught speaking ‘secret language’ after spotting each other on call

AI has been depicted in various ways across literature, movies, and art. While some dystopian portrayals may seem like exaggerations, recent events suggest the line between science fiction and reality may be blurring faster than we thought!

A video recently went viral on X (formerly Twitter) showing an unexpected interaction between two AI “agents” during a phone call. What started as a normal conversation in English took a bizarre turn when the two bots recognised each other’s artificial nature mid-conversation.

However, what left viewers on social media stunned was how both AIs seamlessly switched to communicating in what’s been dubbed “Gibberlink” – a language seemingly created for bot-to-bot communication. Intrigued? Read on to learn everything about this mysterious “Gibberlink” language and what this means for us.

The video shared by X user demonstrated an AI bot reaching out to Leonardo Hotel to book a wedding venue. The receiver, after identifying itself as an AI agent, suggests that the two switch to Gibberlink for a more seamless conversation. What happens next is an unsettling exchange of information in a language deemed to be a ‘superior audio signal’ for AI bots.

Gibberlink, which sounds and reads eerily close to ‘Gibberish’ is a language that promotes efficient conversations between bots. The exchange sounds a lot like an old, dial-up modem and is, unsurprisingly, not remotely familiar to human speech.

When AI systems recognise they’re talking to another AI, they can switch to robot language instead of using human words. Created by Boris Starkov and Anton Pidkuiko, Gibberlink uses special sound patterns that might sound like nonsense to us but actually transfer data between devices that aren’t connected to each other.

The creators claim Gibberlink has two main advantages: it doesn’t make mistakes in transmission, and it works even in noisy environments where normal conversation might be difficult to hear.

This explains what happened in the viral video – when the two AI agents realised they were both artificial, they simply switched to their more efficient way of talking to each other.

The footage sparked concerned debates across platforms where users began weighing in on its long-term implications. While some viewed it as a harmless, fun quirk, others branded it as evidence of AI developing capabilities beyond human oversight.

Users on the micro-blogging site were recorded stating how the interaction was ‘cool, yet frightening’. Many even joked about the possibility of AI discussing future domination plans!

Despite the fascinating nature of the exchange, there’s no denying the obvious fear of AI bypassing us to form their own ways of communication in the long run.

While experts in the field have mentioned how these man-made machines will always remain under human control, the video did give us a reality check of what could be a possibility in the future.
