Audio nirvana isn’t unattainable after all

5 tips and tricks to make your Bluetooth speaker sound better

Whether it is while working cooking dinner in the kitchen, a hike on a Sunday morning with your friends, a poolside party on Friday, or a marathon study session, Bluetooth speakers have always been a constant companion. However just how your experience with them is, also depends on their sound quality.

Now, a common misconception that’s long prevailed now, is that for good sound quality, you must invest in a high-end model from a premium brand. That’s not necessarily the case, however. If used right, even budget Bluetooth speakers, regardless of the brand or price, could potentially help you achieve audio nirvana. Here are five tips and tricks to do just that.

1. Use the right speaker in the right space

The first way to ensure good sound quality from your Bluetooth speaker is to ensure you use it in the right space. For example, a small 10W or 20W speaker may work well for small, single-occupancy rooms. However, larger areas such as your living room will require bigger Bluetooth speakers with outputs of 40W and over.

Additionally, a speaker is always more effective in a closed space, which allows sound to bounce off your walls easily and even enhances it. If you use the speaker in a more open area, maybe by the pool, sound dies out, as it moves away from the source consistently.

2. Keep interference in check

Ensure there is no Bluetooth interference to your speaker. Many times, when your speaker is connected to your smartphone, and your smartwatch or any other devices are connected to it, it can cause the sound to be a little distorted. Make sure your phone (if possible) is connected only to your speaker, and no other devices at the time you’re playing music on it, through a speaker.

Secondly, ensure there are no physical obstacles such as a door, or maybe furniture between your phone and speaker (and you). It may not sound like much, but it makes a world of difference!

3. Keep your speaker squeaky clean

Next, make sure your Bluetooth speaker is clean. Over time, dust and other small debris can settle into your speaker’s grille, which may cause it to sound muffled.

Therefore, make it a point to regularly clean it, maybe with a low-capacity vacuum cleaner, or a soft brush. To pull out especially stubborn bits of debris, consider using a pair of tweezers. However, ensure you don’t end up puncturing the grille in the process as it can make your music sound extremely distorted.

4. Tinker with the equaliser app

Different genres of music are suited to different equaliser settings. Tinker with your equaliser, and try and use present modes such as Rock, Pop, Jazz, or Hip Hop according to the genre of music you happen to be listening to. This ensures each beat of the drums, basslines from the guitar, and every note on the vocals sounds crystal clear, and is never muffled or distorted.

5. Try pairing two or more speakers together

They say two’s a party — and we couldn’t agree more! Should you, or your friend have another Bluetooth speaker, consider playing your music on both of them together. This helps fill out the sound and ensure vibrations from the two speakers, however minutely different in terms of time, mix with each and help create a richer sound output.
