5 reasons why your laptop camera is not working

Remote working has put video calls on a pedestal, making it imperative to have a working webcam for online meetings. But if your laptop camera were to stop working out of the blue, there is obvious panic that ensues at that very moment. However, the best way to fix a laptop issue is by identifying the source of the problem. While there are plenty of reasons that could plague your camera, we have a list of the five most common ones that are likely to be the cause. Check them out here:

5 reasons why your laptop camera may be acting up

Drivers issue: While your camera is built into the laptop, it is still a third-party device that relies on drivers to function. Whether it is missing, corrupt or outdated drivers, addressing this issue first can help you put any software-related concerns away. The best way to rectify this issue is by identifying the make of your webcam and downloading the latest version of the driver.

On your start menu, type Device Manager and click on it. Once the window opens, you will find Imaging Devices as an option. Select your webcam service and right-click to check the status of its driver. Based on the status, you can choose to update, reinstall or roll back to an older version.

Damaged camera: If your laptop camera is damaged, there is a good chance that it might cease to work or give you a distorted output.

From physical damage to dust, water or moisture, it really isn’t easy to pinpoint what could have damaged it. However, you can check out ZipCare plans for your laptop to avail of easy pick-up and servicing at a no-questions-asked policy.

Privacy shutter engaged: Several laptops today come with a privacy shutter to tackle unwanted image capture issues. However, there are instances of the shutter being stuck or damaged for many users. Using a Q-Tip to clean can help free it of any debris that could have caused it to stay stuck. Alternatively, if you have only recently purchased a laptop, make sure you check for a privacy shutter if you find your camera not working for you.

Camera permission: If you deal with a third-party webcam, you may have to grant access before you begin using it. Many apps today also require additional access to get your camera running. The easiest way to check is to visit Settings, click on Camera Privacy Settings and flip the switch for the app you wish to use it for. It is essential to note that if you’re working on a PC run by your employer, the settings for your camera might differ from app to app.

Engaged camera: Although rare, there is a good chance that your camera may be engaged with a different app. This only happens when you have multiple apps running with your camera on and have forgotten to exit one of them. It is best to close all windows before opening up a new application that requires camera access.

While most of these explanations could help you troubleshoot camera issues, if the issue persists, it is best to visit an authorised service centre to avoid it from popping up again.
